FDL-X Heliolab: 2024 ChallengeS

In 2024, FDL-X Heliolab will include four exciting challenges in two different formats; Research Challenges and Research and Technology (R&T) Challenges

The two Research Challenges are low-TRL open research problems which will explore new scientific questions.

The two R&T Challenges have a higher TRL outcome and place more emphasis on modularity, reproducibility, benchmarking and continuous learning - a key concept in ensuring reliability and safety. As in FDL-X in 2023, there still remains a requirement for useful integration between these AI pipelines.

Thermospheric DENSITY Continuous Learning

Can we advance our thermospheric density benchmarking toolbox to enable live streaming of real-world data and continuous learning?

GEOEFFECTIVENESS Continuous Learning

Can we build a prediction of extreme ultraviolet radiation for the inner solar system?

A VIRTUAL DOSIMETER FOR CISLUNAR SPACE FLIGHT

Can we use AI to predict, in real-time, the solar radiation environment exposure for astronauts between LEO and the lunar surface and constrain the prediction with data from the ISS and other locations?

SPECtral Irradiance of the 3d Sun On Mars

Can we develop a benchmarking solution for predicting geomagnetic storms that allows the community to improve the tool with additional datasets, such as magnetic field orientation?

FDL-X researchers have been able to stay a nose ahead in AI application for space and Earth science, and we couldn’t be more proud of this year’s achievements. Thank you to our Researchers, Faculty, Partners and all of the FDL Expert Community!

FDL-X 2023 brought a focus on integration between ML capabilities; FDLers showcased their research at conferences around the world; and the FDL community came together for Earth Systems Predictability (ESP), detailing a vision for a planetary nervous system.

FDL won international recognition (best AI accelerator 2023) and all six 2023 teams presented nearly twenty papers and posters at ESSW, AGU, IAC, EDDY, and NeurIPS workshops.

FDL.AI WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE WITHOUT THE GENEROUS SUPPORT OF OUR PARTNERS AND EXPERT ADVISORY COMMUNITY
