In our never-ending quest to embrace emerging technologies and understand the behaviors and trends that propel them, we continued our surveys of thousands of connected consumers in 2019 on topics ranging from the Connected Car and IoT (Internet of Things) to Mobile First and much more. Here are some of our most interesting findings:
IoT and the Connected Home
- IoT device ownership is up 10% year to year – with nearly 75% reporting to own an IoT Device
- Over two out of three people view IoT as the “Wave of the Future” – a 10% increase since 2018
- Nearly 75% percent of people surveyed watch TV or video via the Internet – an increase of 14% since 2018
- The most commonly owned IoT device category (over 30%) is Smart Bluetooth Trackers such as Tile or TrackR
- The amount of people who are able to monitor their utility usage in real-time via their smartphone more than doubled in 2019
The Connected Car
- Nearly 1 in 5 buyers would walk away from a new car purchase if it didn’t include the expected technology, even if it had everything else they wanted
- Nearly ⅓ of car owners have a vehicle that is able to connect directly to the Internet without the need of their mobile phone
- Nearly 86% value technology as part of the purchase for a new car
Mobile First!
- Nearly 30% of consumers are “extremely interested” in mobile applications for purchasing and scheduling services for their home, a 50% YoY increase over 2018
- 77% of consumers report that it is important that any company they do business with have a great mobile experience, a 10% increase over 2018
- 94% use their mobile phone to manage services such as banking, car services or food deliveries
- 66% own a voice-controlled assistant such as an Amazon Echo or Google Home – a 50% YoY increase over 2018
Smartphones and Healthcare
- Almost three-quarters of consumers are interested in viewing and managing their health care benefits using a smartphone
- Over 80% of consumers would be more likely to visit a doctor or seek treatment if they could see the exact out-of-pocket cost on their smartphone
- 9 out of 10 people would like a smartphone app that provides notification when a doctor sends a prescription along with the pharmacy location and pickup time
