📢 This week was marked by two historic wins on human rights due diligence regulation in the EU! 1️⃣ The Parliament has given its final approval to the Forced Labor regulation. 📌 The regulation enables the 27-country bloc to prohibit the sale, import, and export of goods made using forced labor. 📌 National authorities or the executive Commission will be able to investigate suspicious goods, supply chains, and manufacturers. 📌 If a product is deemed to have been made using forced labor, it will no longer be possible to sell it in the EU market and shipments will be intercepted at the EU's borders. 2️⃣ The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CS3D) was also approved by the Parliament (and now needs Council's approval) 🔶 The Directive introduces first-time mandatory human rights and environmental due diligence requirements, including on slavery, child labor, and biodiversity loss. 🔶 It applies to EU and non-EU companies with activities in the EU meeting certain thresholds and to their upstream and downstream partners, including supply, production and distribution. 🔶 There are significant financial penalties and civil liability for companies that do not fully comply. Even if the laws have their shortcomings, they signal a pivotal moment in the fight against exploitation in supply chains and in increasing companies' responsibility to respect people and the planet. Many of my brilliant LinkedIn connections have posted summaries and explanations about what these two laws mean in practice - for companies and for workers.
