Thursday Night Football Odds Comparison

If you followed the How To Bet podcast and prediction pages during the 2021 National Football League campaign, you will know that we were red hot all season.

I mean, they do call me “The Genius”, right?

All jokes aside, the first season with 17 games will go down in history as one of the best ever, by fans and bettors alike. A record number of people bet on the NFL in states all over the country, and those numbers are expected to continue to rise: imagine if California passes its sports betting law in November?

Speaking of California, the final game of the 2021 season ended at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood with the home team, the Los Angeles Rams, coming back to beat the surprising Cincinnati Bengals 23-20. Amazingly, after it never happened in the first 54 games, home teams won back-to-back Super Bowls (Tampa Bay 31-9 in 2021).

Maybe that is good news for the Arizona Cardinals, as State Farm Stadium in Glendale will host the big game on February 13, 2023.

It might be the team playing on opening night that is the AFC participant, as the Buffalo Bills visit SoFi to take on the Rams to kick off the 2022 campaign. The Bills are the current favorites to win the AFC +350 and the Super Bowl +550, and are a slight favorite early on to beat Los Angeles on Thursday, September 8.

That line is probably going to change many times over the next few months, as both teams lose players to injury and sign others to strengthen their squads.

There have been a couple playoff rematches to open up over the last decade, but this might be the most anticipated game of any over the years: the champs vs. the betting favorites. Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp vs. Josh Allen and Stefon Diggs.

It is a bettors’ dream. Here is the preview.

NFL Week 1 Thursday Night Football

  • Matchup: Buffalo Bills (0-0) at Los Angeles Rams (0-0)
  • Time: 8:20 p.m. EDT, 7:20 p.m. CDT, 6:20 p.m. MDT, 5:20 p.m. PDT
  • TV Channel: NBC and fubo.TV
  • Last Week’s Scores: This is the opening game for both, but check back for preseason final week scores.
  • Opening Moneyline Odds: Bills -110, Rams -110
  • Current Moneyline Odds: Bills -110, Rams -110
  • Opening Point Spread Lookahead Line: Bills -1, -104
  • Current Point Spread Lines: Bills -1, -104
  • Over/Under Total Opening Line: 52
  • Current Over/Under Total: 52.5

🤕 Injury Updates: Check back at the end of August after training camp and preseason to see which players will not be ready to go opening night.

Check the injury report daily in the days leading up to the game, as the COVID-19 protocols could change the lines quickly if players are out.

  • Head-2-Head: these teams usually play every four years, which was the pattern in 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020. But they go off schedule for this potential Super Bowl matchup: Buffalo won 35-32 in 2020, and has scored over 30 points against the Rams in three of the last four games, winning all three of those. The Rams won 15-12 in 2012.
  • What to watch for: this is a big-time contest on opening night, and the crowd will be going wild when the Rams hoist the banner as defending Super Bowl champions. But the Bills might be on a mission following the way their season ended in early 2022, and could be a live play here.

This is everything you would expect from the NFL for an opening night contest. Both of these teams will think they can win conference titles and the championship, so this should be an entertaining affair.

Starting with the 2014 NFL season opener, the defending Super Bowl champion is 6-1 in this Thursday Night Football game, and they have won the last three (in 2019, New England did not play in the opener). Could that be a sign for bettors to take the Rams?

Prediction: This is a VERY EARLY prediction, because we do not know what is going to happen on the injury front. But all things normal, I think the Bills are the team to beat in the AFC, and this could be a chance to lay down an early marker against the defending champions. But the Super Bowl winner almost ALWAYS wins the opener. Take the Rams 35-30.

Thursday Night Football Odds: The Markets

Learn all about the specifics of every main Thursday Night Football odds market to make better bets

Thursday Night Football odds are available for all of your favorite NFL betting markets and understanding how to bet on them is a must. Let’s take a look at the main ones here.

Thursday Night Football Money Line

The Thursday Night Football money line market requires you to predict which team will win the game. Nothing more and nothing less. Bet on the team you expect to win and if they succeed then your wager will do likewise at the Thursday Night Football odds offered. This is a simple market but it doesn't tend to offer the best TNF odds about the favorites, so it isn't as popular as the Thursday Night Football spread.

Thursday Night Football Spread

Also known as the Thursday Night Football point spread, the Thursday Night Football spread market requires you to predict which team will win and by how much. Although this is a bit more of a challenge than that posed by the moneyline, the Thursday Night Football spread will usually offer you better odds for a winning bet. That makes the Thursday Night Football point spread particularly attractive to bettors everywhere.

Over/Under Thursday Night Football

Bet on the over/under Thursday Night Football and you only need to predict whether the total number of points scored will be over or under a figure quoted by the online sportsbooks. This makes over/under Thursday Night Football bets very attractive, especially to those who can't quite decide who will win, but feel more confident about how many points will be scored. The Thursday Night Football odds for this market will tend to be modest, but balanced.

Thursday Night Football Prop Bets

You won't need to predict the winner of the game at all when you make Thursday Night Football prop bets, which are also known as TNF prop bets. Instead, you'll be betting on an outcome that will take place within the game. Example prop bets Thursday Night Football fans can make include whether or not a certain player will make a touchdown and which team will score first. The odds available for TNF prop bets tend to be even more generous than for the Thursday Night Football spread, but Thursday Night Football prop bets are also more difficult to win with. That said, the best prop bets for Thursday Night Football are as exciting as they get.

There are other markets that you can look at, each offering their own odds. However, these are the best bets for Thursday Night Football and the ones you would do well to focus on. If you think that you will be able to predict the game winner, the Thursday Night Football spread or moneyline will be most suitable. If you'd rather avoid having to make that prediction, focus on the Thursday Night Football prop bets or over/under Thursday Night Football opportunities. TNF prop bets are probably the ones to look at if you want the biggest Thursday Night Football odds.

Thursday Night Football Schedule

The NFL tries to make sure no team is forced to play more than one Thursday Night Football game per season. The league wants to ensure teams don’t have to endure the short week of practice required more than once.

The NFL also tries to make sure the Thursday Night Football game is a marquee matchup, worthy of being the lone game on that day and broadcast in primetime.

Thursday Night Football Betting Tips

Learn how to make the best bets for TNF predictions with our expert tips

The Thursday Night Football games are not easy to handicap, and the odds reflect that. Usually, both teams are on short rest with a condensed practice week and less recovery time for injuries.

If a team is coming off a bye week or has extra days off, that can be a big boost to winning a TNF bet. You also want to find the healthiest team so get the most up-to-date Thursday Night Football injury lists before making a bet.

There’s not a lot of time for narratives to develop for a Thursday game. The home team has an advantage with more practice time since they don’t have to travel. With less practice time, the better coaching staff also has more of an impact on this game. Again, the Thursday Night Football odds will take all these factors into consideration.
