Catalyzing uptake and unlocking private investment for productive use appliances in emerging markets

CLASP and Nithio’s financing facility makes productive use appliances (PUAs) more affordable to consumers and companies in emerging markets. Access to affordable and energy-efficient productive use appliances can increase the demand for energy while accelerating the developmental impacts of electrification by creating jobs, enhancing productivity, and lowering carbon emissions.

Despite their transformative potential, productive use appliance sales are extremely low, and affordability is the biggest barrier to market growth. Unit costs are high and consumer financing for appliances is unaffordable to millions of people.

How it Works

The facility operates across the off-grid, mini-grid, and grid-connected (utility) sectors, initially in Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Kenya, Nigeria,  Sierra Leone and Uganda. CLASP and Nithio identified six appliance technologies based on their relative maturity and potential to drive development impact – walk-in cold rooms, refrigerators, electric cookers, fans, mills, and solar water pumps.

Facility operations will also generate a foundational data set on appliance market activity and the developmental impacts of appliances, improving our collective knowledge base on appliance performance, national markets, and consumer experience and satisfaction.

Let’s make productive use appliances affordable and accessible

CLASP is partnering with Nithio, with support from the  Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP). Read our launch announcement.
