  • The world just said #FarewelltoFluorescents. 147 governments at the Minamata Convention on Mercury’s Fifth Conference of Parties (COP5) agreed to phase out all mercury-added lamps by 2027, effectively putting an end to the fluorescent lighting industry and accelerating the market towards efficient LED technology. The decision’s benefits cumulatively to 2050 are massive, and their wide-reaching climate impacts are critical in fight for a healthier and more sustainable world. The impacts of the decision will: 💡 Avoid 2.7 gigatonnes of CO2 emissions cumulatively between 2026/7-2050 💡 Save US$1.13 trillion on electricity bills 💡 Eliminate 158 tonnes of mercury pollution, both from the light bulbs themselves and from avoided mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants Learn more in our press release. https://lnkd.in/gF3PUmrp

In less than a decade, LEDs took over approximately 75% of India’s lighting market share - almost entirely displacing mercury-ladened compact fluorescents - as a result of India’s UJALA program. The program distributed approximately 368 million LEDs since its launch, avoiding 38 million tons of #carbondioxide emissions per year, reducing 6 tons of mercury pollution, and saving consumers USD $2.3 billion in electricity costs, according to Energy Services Limited. However, the program represents something much more than just LED adoption. It showcases how effectively a timely government intervention can transform a market towards clean, sustainable technology, drive economic growth, promote human health and climate resiliency, and set a blueprint for other countries to follow suit. As the global LED market grows and more countries say #FarewellToFluorescents, exporters of mercury-ladened lighting are turning their attention towards un & under-regulated markets, like those across Africa - further exacerbating the current high costs of living, lack of potable water, and strained energy grids in these countries. In a piece for LED Magazine, Roger Baro & Oarabile M. Serumola, the Co-Chairs to the COP5 Minamata Convention on Mercury Africa Region, are calling upon the global lighting industry to support an amendment to phase out mercury in lighting, and accelerate the transition to LEDs. In November, the 143 parties to the Minamata Convention will have an opportunity to mitigate this environmental dumping, and cumulatively avoid 3.3 Gt of CO2 emissions and save $1.34 trillion in electricity bills by 2050 by supporting the COP5 African Lighting Amendment. The amendment will effectively end the import, export and manufacture of all fluorescent lamps globally. Read the full piece: https://lnkd.in/ecsce7As
