NY Sports Betting: Detailed New York Online Sportsbook Guide

NY sports betting became legal for in-person wagering in 2019 but only from January 2022 you can do it with an online sportsbook. This became possible after the New York State Gaming Commission approved the launching of Caesars, FanDuel, DraftKings, and BetRivers on January 8, followed soon by five more operators – BetMGM, PointsBet, Bally Bet, WynnBet, and Resorts World. The public response was smashing and the early signs are that the New York online sports betting scene is on its way to becoming the biggest by far in the USA.

How To Bet will give you insight into the major online (desktop sites and mobile apps) and retail operators in the Empire State and will assist you in finding the perfect one for your needs. Is Sports Betting Legal in New York?

See if using NY sports betting sites and apps is legal now

‘When will sports betting be legal in New York?’ This question was on the tip of the tongue for locals in the Empire State for far too long. Now they can finally feel relieved because both in-person and online NY sports betting are 100% legal and available as of today.

The start of this process was given in 2013 when the state legalized this type of gambling at its commercial casinos. Six years later, in July 2019, in-person sportsbooks began operating in New York following the US Supreme Court decision to lift the federal ban on sports gambling.

Then in November 2021 the NYS Gaming Commission approved the launching of nine NY online sports betting sites and apps, and at 9am on Saturday, January 8, 2022 four of them began this long awaited journey. The other five should be available pretty soon this year and it certainly looks like the industry is about to thrive.

New York Sports Betting Bill

There is a lack of a specific NY sports betting bill at the moment in terms of the online/ mobile kind of this gambling activity. The state resolution from November 2013 for gaming expansion is the law that serves to regulate online sports wagering.

NY Online Sports Betting Rules to Know

The people asking ‘is sports betting legal in New York?’ and ‘is online sports betting legal in New York?’ should see these main points we at How To Bet have compiled for their convenience and calmness. After all, it’s always good to keep on the right side of the law.

  • All persons engaging in New York online sports betting must be at least 21 years old. This is the legal sports betting age NY requires.
  • When placing bets with an online New York sportsbook, you must be inside the state lines. This will be verified through an IP address or geolocation technology located in your mobile device.
  • NY sports betting rules forbid betting on in-state college teams but you are permitted to wager on college events that take place inside the Empire State.
  • Betting on high school sports is illegal because the majority of participants are 18 years or younger.
  • You are a ‘prohibited sports bettor’ to the NYSGC if you are a: player/athlete, coach/trainer/physician, referee, sports agent, team owner/employee, sportsbook/casino employee, etc.

How to Pick the Best New York Sportsbook for You

Learn how to pick the best NY sports betting sites and apps for your needs and preferences

How To Bet has listed only the legal and most trusted names on the NY online sports betting scene, making your job of choosing the right sportsbook for you really easy. Our expert team did a thorough due diligence on all the sites and apps in the Empire State looking for the most safe, secure, enjoyable ones that offer the best markets, odds, and payouts.

Even so, if you plan to research for yourself, here are our tips on what to look for. The most important thing is to never settle for anything less than the best.

  • Legal status: Any NY online sports betting operator must be licensed and regulated by state gambling regulators.
  • Credibility: The online sportsbook you choose must have an impeccable reputation so that you’re not worried about your personal and financial information.
  • Accessibility: You must be able to consistently access the site/ app you like from any point in the Empire State with internet connection.
  • User experience: The NY sports betting sites/ apps you pick should offer you a pleasant journey right from the start to the very end of the wagering process. Easy-to-use interface and smooth navigation are top of the list of priorities.
  • Bonuses and promotions: Bonus offers, including free bets, Welcome or deposit bonus, are hugely important factors, so check thoroughly for them before you commit. Our advice is to sign up with more than one NY sportsbook to take full advantage of the promotions that are put on the table.
  • Payment options: Multiple deposit and withdrawal methods must be made available to you, starting with the most popular ones like credit/ debit cards, PayPal, bank transfers, etc.
  • Attractive odds: The betting lines must be so appealing that you can’t resist placing a wager on them. The company should be known for having these types of odds regularly. Odds Boosts are another recommended feature, as is the Cash Out.
  • Variety of betting markets: The online sports betting NY operator you choose must offer a vast array of markets – from moneylines to in-game betting and props. Every bettor has his favorite type of wagers and the company you pick must offer it.
  • Customer support: Many NY sports betting fans will never need it, but those that do should be able to get appropriate, friendly and polite assistance with a minimum of delay.

NY Sports Betting Bonuses and Promotions

See the types of great bonuses and promotions offered by NY sports betting sites and apps

Finding bonus offers is a next to impossible task when you wager at a retail sportsbook because, when betting in-person, you’re not using an account which tracks your history with the company. This makes loyalty bonuses a no go. But the picture is totally different when you turn to the New York online sports betting sites and mobile apps. You’ll be greeted with tons of appealing offers, some more complex than others. If you want to dig a little deeper and reap the benefits of that knowledge, check our page for NY free bets and bonus codes. Now let’s concentrate on the main bonuses and promotions that will come your way in the Empire State.

Welcome Bonus

This is one of the easiest ways that NY mobile sports betting apps will attract new business. The Welcome bonus often comes in the form of a risk-free bet that only triggers in the event that it loses, but even that can have a lot of value. Be sure to look for these bonuses when choosing an online sportsbook.

Deposit Bonus

Deposit bonuses can be more profitable than Welcome bonuses, so use them when you're looking for a way to quickly add money to your online account. It is not uncommon to find ones that total up to $500 in free money. Keep in mind that there will be a playthrough requirement, meaning that you'll need to wager the bonus amount a specific number of times before you can withdraw it, but free money is free money. Always read about this type of bonus offer before you make a deposit.

Pro tip: when trying to meet a playthrough requirement, wager the money on low odds. This gives you more chances of keeping hold of it and getting successfully to the withdrawal point.

Loyalty Programs

Loyalty programs are mostly a casino rewarding scheme and they're rarely available at a stand-alone sportsbook. However, if the New York sportsbook is connected to an online casino site, then there is a chance that you can use a rewards program for both accounts. Always double-check, because if a loyalty program is offered, you don't want to miss out on the free bonuses that come with it.

These programs usually come in tier systems, which are dependent on how much money you wager in a month or quarter. You can be promoted or demoted, depending on your spending patterns. The rewards for the higher tiers are much better of course, but you always need to way up the risk to reward. Remember that when placing any bets as every wager comes with a great deal of risk.

Refer a Friend

This type of bonus is perhaps the most simple of them all. You can receive a referral code at any time and if someone signs up to the selected sportsbook with it, you will both reap a small benefit. So if you have a friend or family member who is eligible to register, definitely ask them to sign up using your code. Even if they never use the account, they are still doing you a favor. The ‘Refer a Friend’ bonus is a crafty way for New York sportsbooks to pull in more customers and increase their player stats.

Important Notes on Bonuses and Promotions

Always read the fine print when you decide on which NY sportsbook to pick based on its bonuses and promotions. The key lies in the Terms & Conditions. The first thing you have to remember is that NY online sports betting operators pay out in cash only in some cases and many times the rewards come in site credits like free bets. You get to withdraw your winnings only after you’ve used these credits or, in other cases, gone successfully through the playthrough requirements.

FanDuel Sportsbook New York

FanDuel is offering new bettors from New York a risk free bet when you join them in the Empire State. To claim the offer, you need to register, make a first deposit, and then place your first real-money wager up to $1000.

If you bet $1000 and lose, FanDuel will give you a $1000 Bet Voucher. If you then bet that voucher on a +100 line and win, they will pay you the $1000 in winnings (from the odds), as well as $1000 for the value of the wager. This is paid in cash, not in a free wager, making this offer one of the highest value offers on the market.

DraftKings Sportsbook New York

DraftKings is offering sports bettors in New York up to $1,050 free just for registering. You’ll get a $50 free bet for new users and an additional deposit match of up to $1,000. These offers will surely attract a large number of punters to this reputable sportsbook.

Caesars Sportsbook New York

Caesars Sportsbook has landed in the New York online sports betting scene with two monstrous offers: a $300 free bet with no deposit needed at signup and a 100% first deposit match bet up to $3,000! Do you see any respectable reason not to take advantage of them right away?

Keep in mind though that both of these free bets will expire 30 days after being received if you don’t use them.

BetMGM Sportsbook New York

When you start your new NY sports betting journey with the BetMGM’s online sportsbook launching in the state soon, you will be greeted with a risk free bet up to $1000. This does not require a promo code, just follow the ‘claim now’ option straight from our site and follow the instructions from there.

The free bet credits will expire after seven days, so as with the Caesars offer, don’t forget about them!

Types of NY Online Sports Betting Markets

See the betting markets from respected NY sportsbooks

If you know the betting markets, you are certainly a person who has an idea on how to bet online on sports. Here are the main types of wagers to make with online sports betting NY operators.

  • Moneyline: A win/loss bet that uses odds to determine the difference between the favorite and the underdog. In American moneylines, a plus sign denotes the underdog and a minus sign is for the favorite.
  • Point Spread: Take the points, or lay them. A point spread is used to determine the favorite and the underdog, and your bet is a winner if the team covers the points.
  • Totals: Also known as an over/under, this bet is on the total combined points scored, and if the number will go over or under the posted line.
  • Parlays: Small bets combined into one large bet, which, if it wins, pays off big. The appealing potential winnings make players love parlays, but since it takes just one loss to sink the entire bet, sportsbooks love them too.
  • Futures
  • Live sports betting
  • First half / second half
  • Early redemption bets
  • Round robin bets
  • Player props
  • Team props
  • Teasers

Sports and Events Available with NY Sports Betting

Excluding high school sports, NY sports betting is legal and available online for almost any sporting event taking place around the world.

Along with the main team sports of football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and soccer, you can also wager on rugby, golf, tennis, darts, cycling, motorsports, table tennis, volleyball, MMA, and boxing, among many others.

How to Start Your NY Online Sports Betting Journey

Here’s how to start your NY online sports betting journey

1. Download and install your preferred NY sports betting app

2. Sign up for your betting account

Whether you are accessing a NY online sports betting operator through its website or a mobile app, signing up for your new account is easy and straightforward. The information required for registration is:

  • Date of birth
  • Phone number

As well as the vast amount of New York online sports betting options, there are also a number of different retail sportsbooks. All commercial and tribal casinos have their own sports betting facilities, although each of them is upstate. New York Online Sports Betting in Comparison with Other States

Here’s how New York online sports betting compares to other states

New York online sports betting is similar in a lot of ways to that in other states. You can bet on a wide range of sports in the US and abroad, the betting markets available work in the same way as anywhere else, and the act of placing a bet is also very straightforward.

If you look a little closer though, you'll see that NY online sports betting does differ in a few areas. How To Bet will highlight those differences so you can appreciate the uniqueness of the Empire State betting market. Let’s have a look at how NY sports betting online and retail operators compare to the competition in the USA.

  • New York (understandably) has less sportsbooks compared to New Jersey

It’s not a big surprise that the Empire State has 9 licensed sportsbooks while its neighbor has more than two dozen. The record-breaking license fees ($25 million) and tax rates (51%) will make sure the Garden State number isn’t reached soon. The tax rates in New Jersey betting sites are a mere 13.5% and while the license fee for gambling in Pennsylvania is still very high ($20 million), New York is a clear leader on both fronts.

  • You can’t bet on New York college teams and events

New York, like its neighbor New Jersey, bans betting on its college teams and on collegiate events, no matter if the participating teams are local. This isn’t the case for example in Pennsylvania sportsbooks where the bettor has more liberties.

  • New York’s pricing is still not 100% clear

The pricing situation in the Empire State is still not certain given the 51% tax rate but the early signs are good. Plus, like in Tennessee, NY online sports betting apps and sites may find ways to compensate with the juice on their odds. Stay tuned: How To Bet will update you on the situation in comparison with other states.

  • NY sports betting fans can root for some great sporting teams from their own state

These include the New York Yankees, New York Mets, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, New York Jets, New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, New York Rangers, New York Islanders, New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, New York Red Bulls, New York City FC, and New York Liberty. The US Open is a major local sporting event as well, not just for the tennis world.

  • Lower access for smaller sportsbooks

Only the biggest companies and those that are connected to the now existing casinos are present at the moment in New York. This is not surprising considering the high license fee and huge tax rate. Smaller sportsbooks stay away for now, while in states like Colorado the market is booming.

  • No esports available for betting in New York

In New York, there’s a prohibition for online betting on events other than sporting ones, which translates onto pop culture events (for example the Oscar and Grammy awards) and esports, at least for the moment. A lot of states – like Colorado, West Virginia, and Virginia – permit wagering on esports, but New York is still out of this list.

New York Sports Betting Update

See the latest New York sports betting update and news on the subject

The latest New York sports betting update shows to all of us why the Empire State is such a massive piece of the US online gambling puzzle. In the first 12 hours after launch on January 8th, 2022, NY sports betting generated 5.8 million geolocation pings (log-ins or bets), according to GeoComply, which more than doubled the 2.3 million from the state that fell to 2nd place in this important ranking – Pennsylvania. The Empire State produced 64% higher volumes even when adjusting for population and across the whole weekend there were 17.2 million pings! Add another fact that speaks for itself: more than 8 million of these pings came from the five boroughs of New York City, which is a larger volume than any recorded by whichever other state in the country.

This unprecedented launch is a clear sign that the state of New York is already on its way to become the largest sports betting market in the USA.

But along with the highs came the lows. Caesars may have taken almost 1 million bets over the first weekend of operation in the Empire State (about nine times higher than the company’s Arizona’s launching in September, 2021), but paid the price for it by suffering a few outages. On Sunday, January 9th, the online sportsbook was even down for three hours or so. The previous day similar problems happened to other operators like DraftKings and FanDuel. After passing this test though, it certainly seems that for New York sports betting the only way is up, straight to the top of the heap.

Responsible NY Sports Betting

The most important thing to remember when sports betting isn’t player stats, injury lists and form records. It's to do so responsibly. It doesn’t matter if it's a dollar bet or ten thousand, you need to be smart and make sure your head is always in the game.

A lot of the major NY sports betting sites have tools to help you gamble responsibly. Some of the best features are:

  • Tools to limit spending and how many bets you place
  • Notifications and alerts telling you how long you have been on the site or app
  • Ads for gambling rehabilitation options

We here at How To Bet are strong advocates of responsible NY sports betting. That's why we always advise that you only bet with money you can comfortably afford to lose, no matter how much you think your selection is a ‘sure thing’. In betting, there is no such thing as a sure thing, and some of the worst losses come suddenly, straight out of left field.

If you recognise that your betting has become out of hand, head to one of these sites for support and guidance to help you get your sports betting under control.

Brief History of NY Sports Betting

Learn the important facts in the history of NY sports betting

In 2013, New York introduced gambling to the state by legalizing commercial casinos. This allowed tribal casinos to start sports betting activities in select four venues and in 2019 the first NY sportsbooks opened.

Recently, a New York sports betting bill was approved by the former governor Andrew Cuomo. This move paved the way for the official start of sports wagering on Saturday, January 8th, 2022 with the launching of the DraftKings, FanDuel, Caesars, and BetRivers mobile apps.

The likelihood is that more sportsbooks will follow suit in the near future, giving NY sports betting enthusiasts a big variety when picking the right one for their needs and preferences.
