In the second of a short series of articles on approaches to our work in EHS and Sustainability consulting, we hear from Erik Foley with Antea Group USA on how to thrive as a sustainability specialist. He outlines four essential roles sustainability leaders must play to stay relevant and drive business value—from strategist and collaborator to risk analyst and bridge-builder. Most importantly, he explains why sustainability conversations need to start with business priorities and not ESG acronyms. "If you are working on sustainability, you are working on the wrong thing. You should be working on the business... In the same way that R&D, HR, IT, IR, marketing, etc. are means for realizing business objectives, sustainability is in service to the business. Sustainability professionals must constantly demonstrate the strategic value of their work. Those who succeed are the storytellers, the data-sharers, the connectors who translate sustainability efforts into tangible financial gains, cultural cohesion, and operational effectiveness," Erik Foley. What better way to connect global expertise with local impact than by going underground? At the Inogen Associates meeting last month in Tamaki Makarau, Auckland, Tonkin + Taylor gave Associates from across the Alliance a tour of Auckland’s City Rail Link, New Zealand’s largest ever transport infrastructure project. The City Rail Link (CRL) is a 3.45km twin-tunnel, underground rail link 42m below Auckland’s Central Business District. The CRL enhances the Auckland rail network, allowing trains to run both ways through the Britomart station. This efficient and reliable transport investment will support economic development and significantly ease congestion in the central city. The rail network can more than double peak flows to 54,000 people an hour. From deep below ground to big-picture planning, Tonkin + Taylor has supported the City Rail Link through 20+ service areas. The team has helped shape the project from geotechnical reviews and groundwater monitoring to detailed civil design, safety-in-design workshops, and environmental management. It’s been an exciting opportunity to apply our expertise to a city-shaping piece of infrastructure. From engineering feats to urban transformation, the visit sparked great conversations around innovation, sustainability, and what it takes to deliver a project of this scale in partnership. We would like to thank Tonkin + Taylor’s Simonne Eldridge, Technical Director – Environmental Engineering, and Jeremy O'Neill, Lynsey Dyer, Design Manager and Duayne Cloke, Head of Safety, Sustainability and Environment at Link Alliance . May 22 is International Day for Biological Diversity. We face a biodiversity crisis around the world, as many countries rush to save their species and habitats. Human interaction and overdevelopment are amongst the major contributors to biodiversity loss, along with climate change. How can we rethink our traditional development practices in order to better serve our species, our environments and our communities? In our podcast episode on Biodiversity Natural Wealth, and Resilient Ecosystems, we hear from experts in Costa Rica with CDG Environmental Advisors; New Zealand with Tonkin + Taylor; and France with HPC INTERNATIONAL SAS, about biodiversity efforts and challenges in their countries. While there is a growing recognition that biological diversity is a global asset of tremendous value to future generations, the number of species is being significantly reduced by certain human activities. Given the importance of public education and awareness about this issue, the UN decided to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity annually. In the first of a short series of articles on approaches to our work in EHS and Sustainability consulting, we're thrilled to feature insights from our global experts, starting with Lauri Niemelä from DGE Finland. Discover how empathy and curiosity transform EHS audits into more human-centered experiences. "In reality, no one knows a business or a site as well as the people dedicating large parts of their life to whatever it is that we audit. That’s something we remind ourselves often. As consultants, we come in with technical knowledge, legal frameworks, and experience from many sectors. But we’re also outsiders. And we believe that the best audits and assessments happen when we combine our external perspective with the target sites or organization’s internal expertise, through real dialogue and curiosity," Lauri Niemela.
