Coffee-as-usual isn’t fair. It forces farmers to be price takers amid a highly volatile market. They pay up front for labor, for plants, for farm infrastructure, and what happens if the market price plummets at the time of their harvest? They involuntarily subsidize the commodity market. How are farmers supposed to budget for their households and their businesses if they can’t count on a stable price for their coffee? This is where our Fairtrade Minimum Price comes in. It’s a price floor, and it’s informed by the average cost of sustainable production. An important thing to note--when the market price is higher than the Fairtrade Minimum Price, farmers get paid that higher price.
